We all want to make an impact on the world and leave our mark. As a commercial real estate professional, you want to feel proud of your contributions (whether this is at your company or for the industry as a whole). Your goals may stop shy of desiring awards, but if you’re able to provide value, it can be incredibly empowering.
If you’d like to make an impact in commercial real estate, here are a few ideas to inspire you.
1. Create Valuable Content
Whether it’s a blog, podcast or book, getting content out into the world is easier than ever these days. Even if you’re not a writer, there’s likely a content channel or medium where you’ll thrive. Interviews with existing podcasts, blogs or shows is another way to contribute valuable content. Build your brand and make a name for yourself, your company and commercial real estate as a whole.
2. Identify Areas of Improvement
You’ll make a meaningful impact in your own portfolio and for your company when you start capturing the right data and making realistic assessments of where you are and where you want to be. When you improve professionally or personally, it makes life better for those around you. A small shift in attitude can have a large improvement on team or family morale, as one example. The only way to make measurable improvement is to identify the areas that need improvement from the outset.
3. Set Goals
“We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams.” Willy Wonka may be fictional, but he knew how to think big. Set goals, even if they’re intimidating, and you’ll be pushed to achieve them. Once you set goals and look back on how much progress you made toward them, you can see the benefits of dreaming bigger than your current situation.
4. Be A Thought Leader
Absorb as much information as you can, as long as it doesn’t add to your stress levels or workload. Consider listening to a podcast on the way to work, read a book during lunch and catch up on the latest CRE blogs, newsletters and articles online in between tasks. The more industry knowledge you have, the more people will see you as a thought leader.
5. Do The Right Thing
At the end of the day, if all you can do is the ethically right thing, it will make an impact in commercial real estate (and the world in general). Integrity will always be a valuable character trait and if you can make progress on it and avoid sketchy or dishonest ways to improve your portfolio, you’ll be a better person and have a positive effect on those around you.
